Dapo Akande, Chichele Professor of Public International Law, and Co-Director of the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict (ELAC), will receive an honorary degree from Durham University this summer.
Professor Akande will be made an honorary Doctor of Civil Law, in recognition of his influence on the field of international law.

He has also acted as a consultant/advisor in cases in national courts, including the UK Supreme Court.
He was also a Law Lecturer at Durham from 2000-2004.
Professor Akande stated that "It is a tremendous honour to learn that Durham University will confer an honorary Doctor of Civil Law degree on me. I had a wonderful period in the early part of my career as a Lecturer in Law at Durham Law School. I am grateful to the University not only for the honorary doctorate but for providing a lovely scholarly environment that was the perfect launchpad for what I have gone on to do."
Honorary graduates will attend the summer Congregation ceremony on Wednesday 9 July at 11:00am, joining thousands of graduating students in celebration.
Durham’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Karen O’Brien, said “The honorary graduates are exceptional individuals whose achievements have had a profound impact in their fields and beyond. They reflect the values we hold dear as a University: excellence, creativity, integrity and making a positive difference in the world.”
